Prehospital Clinical Guidelines – A Tool for Developing Your Curriculum

Resources

Presented by Dr. Christian Martin-Gill
Professor of Emergency Medicine and Chief of the Division of Emergency Medical Services at the University of Pittsburgh and an Attending Emergency Physician at UPMC

Evidence-based guidelines (EBGs), position statements, and many other publications are constantly being produced that provide recommendations for clinical care or operations relevant to EMS medicine. However, the quality of the evidence evaluation and how those recommendations are developed varies substantially. This talk will leverage knowledge gained from three systematic reviews of prehospital EBGs completed by the Prehospital Guidelines Consortium to provide participants with key lessons learned for how to evaluate the quality of recommendation-based publications and how to identify the highest quality guidelines. This session will also review resources available to educate EMS professionals about high quality guidelines and primary research that are being incorporated by the NREMT in continued competency activities.

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the history and current efforts being undertaken to develop prehospital guidelines.
  • Identify key elements of high-quality evidence-based guidelines and how they differ from consensus-based guidelines.
  • Identify and use available resources to educate other EMS professionals about specific high-quality guidelines and primary research.
